It was possibly a marriage bed, due to the nesting birds and the familial grouping on the footboard. The headboard shows one woman clipping cupid’s wings, while he sleeps. Another takes his bow and arrows. Perhaps this is to stop any attempt on Cupid’s part to threaten the marriage with a stray amorous adventure.
